Atlantis ILIO Persistent VDI 4.0 Friday, March 8th, 2013

Atlantis ILIO Persistent VDI 4.0 Accelerates VDI Adoption by Eliminating the Cost and Performance Barriers of Persistent Virtual Desktop Deployments

Mountain View, CA and Las Vegas, NV – February 26, 2013 – Today at VMware Partner Exchange (PEX) 2013, Atlantis Computing™, the award-winning leader in data center storage optimization solutions, released Atlantis ILIO Persistent VDI 4.0. The new release is the first solution that enables Citrix XenDesktop and VMware View customers to run persistent virtual desktops In-Memory using RAM as primary storage, making persistent virtual desktops cheaper and faster than physical PCs. The solution delivers a better-than-PC user experience at an infrastructure cost that is less than $300 per desktop, while at the same time fully automating the deployment for thousands of users.

Today Atlantis Computing also announced it tripled its customer base and sold more than a quarter of a million licenses to datehttp://www.atlantiscomputing.com/pr_20130226b

Most IT organizations would prefer to deploy persistent virtual desktops because that deployment model is the least disruptive to an IT organization. It uses the same desktop images already deployed on PCs, as well as the existing tools and processes already in place and perfected over the last several years to maintain and upgrade those images. However, without Atlantis ILIO, persistent desktops require so much storage to achieve the same level of performance as a PC that most organization cannot afford to deploy them. The cost of storage typically drives up the combined CAPEX and OPEX cost of the infrastructure (server, storage and network) to $1,000-$2,000 per desktop in order to deliver equal-to-PC performance.

According to Gartner, “storage is the No. 1 challenge most IT organizations face when considering virtual desktop (server-hosted virtual desktop or virtual desktop infrastructure) projects. Persistent storage is the easiest solution to deploy, but can result in significantly higher back-end storage costs because every user is assigned a dedicated virtual desktop image.”  Moreover, “with an average cost per virtual desktop of over $1,000, the typical cost of storage is $400 to $600 per desktop. I/O acceleration software can support diskless, DAS or other storage configurations and has been proven at scale above 10,000 virtual desktops.”

“We have an existing persistent VDI user base that we plan to keep growing because desktop management is simple and the user experience is similar to a PC,” said Christopher Green, Vice President, IT Infrastructure Systems, Washington Trust Bank. “We have been using Atlantis ILIO software since 2011 to optimize storage performance for our VDI environment, which has improved desktop performance and the efficiency of our SAN storage. With the new Atlantis ILIO Persistent VDI 4.0, the entire virtual desktop runs in server RAM, making it much faster than a physical PC.”

Atlantis ILIO Persistent VDI 4.0 is the first In-Memory VDI storage solution that enables organizations to deliver persistent virtual desktops that run completely using server RAM as storage. Atlantis ILIO In-Memory storage technology delivers the performance of local server RAM, while at the same time maintaining a real-time optimizedbackup using a small amount of shared SAN/NAS storage to ensure data protection and availability. Atlantis ILIO Center provides a push-button, fully automated deployment to operationalize multiple racks of servers for thousands of users in hours, addressing many of the deployment risks of desktop virtualization.

To see a demonstration of the desktop user experience with Atlantis ILIO Persistent VDI 4.0, visit http://www.atlantiscomputing.com/persistent_user_experience_video

“The downside with VDI is that it has been expensive, complicated and prone to failure because of the cost and complexity of delivering sufficient storage IOPS to the desktop with traditional SAN or NAS,” said Mark Bowker, Senior Analyst, Enterprise Strategy Group. “The Atlantis ILIO Persistent VDI approach of using local server RAM as storage provides a significant boost in IOPS per desktop and removes the complexities associated with traditional storage and network infrastructure.”

“After we delivered Atlantis ILIO Diskless VDI and won the Best of VMworld US and EMEA, as well as the Best of Citrix Synergy awards in 2012, our customers fell in love with the user experience, simplicity and deployment automation of that solution and asked for a similar product for persistent deployments,” said Bernard Harguindeguy, CEO, Atlantis Computing. “With this release, we have rounded out our product offering to deliver all desktop virtualization models using our In-Memory solution to boost performance, simplify architectures and automate persistent VDI, stateless VDI and virtualized Citrix XenApp deployments.”

Atlantis ILIO Persistent VDI 4.0 Features

•In-Memory VDI – Unlike traditional storage, ILIO In-Memory storage decouples desktop performance from the traditional limitations of disk-based storage by running all sessions directly on server RAM – as primary storage –  to provide unparalleled desktop performance including 12 second boot time, near-instant application launches and desktop search results that appear immediately. In addition, because all desktops run on RAM, the amount of storage traffic sent on the network is drastically reduced, addressing one of VDI’s key deployment risks.
•Atlantis ILIO Fast Replication technology maintains a real-time optimized backup on shared SAN/NAS storage to preserve the state of all persistent virtual desktops to deliver data protection and recovery.
•Automated Deployment – Atlantis ILIO Center, the management system for Atlantis ILIO software, provides push-button automated installation, configuration, sizing and datastore creation for thousands of virtual desktops across multiple racks of servers. Atlantis ILIO virtual machines are automatically created and registered as NFS data stores that are ready to use by Citrix XenDesktop or VMware View provisioning tools, or by Atlantis ILIO Fast Clone, to complete the desktop provisioning process.
•Atlantis ILIO Fast Clone – Atlantis ILIO Fast Clone can create new full clones of persistent virtual desktops in as little as 5 seconds per desktop. Unlike other storage cloning, Atlantis ILIO Fast Clone creates new virtual desktops without generating storage traffic.

Atlantis ILIO Technology

Atlantis ILIO software uses patent-pending context-aware storage optimization technologies including:
•Analysing & Processing of Storage IO Traffic – Atlantis ILIO performs context-aware processing of IO operations in real-time at the NTFS file system and block levels to significantly reduce the amount of traffic sent to storage.
•Inline Deduplication – Atlantis ILIO performs “on the wire” inline deduplication in real-time, eliminating up to 95% of the blocks before reaching storage.
•Compression – Atlantis ILIO compresses the optimized blocks before writing them to memory.
•Coalescing (IO Blender Fix) – Atlantis ILIO converts all small random blocks generated by the Windows operating systems and hypervisor – often referred to as the IO blender affect – into larger sequential blocks, greatly improving efficiency.

About Atlantis Computing
Atlantis Computing, winner of “Best of VMworld” and “Best of Citrix Synergy” awards, addresses the challenges of storage-intensive virtualized and cloud applications: performance, cost and the ability to scale-out on demand. Xangati introduceert StormTracker™ Thursday, August 23rd, 2012

Xangati Unveils StormTracker – The Industry’s First Solution to Tackle Performance Storms Devastating Productivity in the Cloud

Powerful, New In-Memory Storm Detection Engine and Contextual User Interface with Multiple Storm Views Allow Managers to Instantly Identify, Track and Resolve Cloud Performance Storms

Cupertino, CA – August 22, 2012 – Xangati, the recognized leader in performance management for virtualization and cloud environments, today unveiled StormTracker™, the industry’s first solution to immediately identify cross-silo storm patterns—through live storm detection as they emerge in a cloud infrastructure. According to a recent ZK Research report, over 90 percent of virtualization admins believe existing management tools don’t provide the integrated insight of how server+hypervisor, network and storage interact, which inhibits IT’s ability to effectively manage cloud performance. (See related release here.) For the first time, Xangati’s StormTracker gives organizations the ability to instantly identify storms, proactively track their impact and know how to remediate them by processing second-by-second insights spanning all interactions occurring throughout the cloud infrastructure.

StormTracker includes a new, robust, in-memory storm detection sub-engine integrated into Xangati’s flagship Performance Management Engine—which leverages a next generation computing architecture; and an interactive and contextual UI with multiple views into the entire cloud environment. In addition, Xangati has integrated performance management with capacity management to deliver essential insights to admins to ensure they right-size the expansion of their cloud hardware infrastructure.

All of the new StormTracker functionality will be integrated into the company’s award-winning Xangati Management Dashboard (XMD) suite as well as its Xangati for vSphere–Free single host tool. StormTracker will also be available as a free upgrade for existing Xangati customers. Xangati will showcase StormTracker at VMworld San Francisco August 26-30, Booth #2413.

“Assuring cloud performance is top of mind for every IT executive seeking to transform their data center. Unfortunately for these executives their clouds are being devastated by transient performance storms flying in under the radar of their pre-existing monitoring solutions,” said Alan Robin, CEO of Xangati. “Only Xangati is rising to the challenge of managing the always in flux cloud infrastructure with StormTracker empowering administrators to instantly identify emerging storms. And even more importantly provides exclusive insight on how to avoid these storms in the future.”

“Traditional alert monitoring solutions were designed to focus on shifts in individual metrics in a pre-cloud data center environment,” said Zeus Kerravala, founder and principal analyst with ZK Research. “My research shows that admins are uncomfortable with this model, given how the data center has evolved—investigating alerts is akin to chasing one’s tail. By tracking storm fronts and their source, Xangati empowers IT to always understand how their cloud is behaving and to instantly identify emerging storms—saving valuable time and resources, while allowing them to anticipate and avoid future storms.”

StormTracker Captures What Competing Solutions Miss – Transient Storage, CPU, Memory and Network Storms
Inherently sluggish database-driven alert monitoring solutions fail to identify storms for two primary reasons. The first is that their after-the-fact architectures miss short-term shifts that are a mainstay of transient storms. The second is that chasing stand-alone metric alerts is only presenting an isolated symptom and doesn’t get one to cause. That is why alert monitoring fosters post-mortem analysis which puts IT in an unproductive reactive posture—where uncovering the source of storms is regularly taking anywhere from two hours up to days.

In contrast, Xangati StormTracker highlights storms instantaneously as they emerge, with key features including:

In-Memory Storm Detection Engine:In addition to its patented Performance Management Engine, Xangati has added a new detection sub-engine designed to identify the most frequently occurring performance storms within cloud environments. The new storm detection engine incorporates an unparalleled automated heuristics capability that:
- Pattern matches interactions and metrics into storms
- Identifies storm cause and impact
- Is programmable to track the cloud’s most devastating storms
- CPU, memory, storage and network
- Toxic application interactions
C
loud-Oriented, Storm Tracking User Interface:In one comprehensive view, both admins and executives will now get a rapid visual understanding of the state of their cloud. The StormTracker UI enables a common framework that allows executives to organizationally drive stronger collaboration among the virtualization/sysadmin, storage and network teams for the delivery of an optimally performing cloud.

The StormTracker UI functionality includes:
Hierarchical views of the cloud, highlighting areas of the infrastructure darkened by storms;

The ability to show cascading performance impact across all cloud silos;
StormRecordings revealing the second-by-second cause of the storm and its areas of impact;
Remediation recommendations for each specific storm; and

Trending analysis on storm frequency and severity.
In addition to the StormTracker specific features, the insight it provides forms the basis of Xangati’s differentiated capacity management analytics. Only Xangati’s solution enables IT organizations to right-size their CPU, memory, disk and network capacity by integrating the understanding of contention-based performance storms into capacity trending. Xangati’s solution will specifically highlight when capacity constraints are correlated to performance storms helping the technical staff fortify the business case for adding incremental hardware to their cloud.

Atlantis Computing Launches Groundbreaking New Storage Optimization Product Sunday, June 24th, 2012

Atlantis Computing Launches Groundbreaking New Storage Optimization Product Onstage at GigaOM Structure for Storage-Intensive Virtualized Server and Cloud Applications

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – June 20, 2012 – Today Atlantis Computing™, a leading provider of storage optimization software for virtual servers and desktops, will unveil Atlantis ILIO FlexCloud 1.0 onstage at GigaOM Structure, one of the most influential cloud computing conferences. The new software product makes it possible for enterprises and service providers to fundamentally change the performance and economics of storage-intensive virtualized server and cloud applications like databases, big data and custom enterprise applications.

“With our success in the desktop virtualization market, we are constantly asked by customers to bring to market solutions for virtual servers that optimize storage utilization like we do for Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI),” said Bernard Harguindeguy, CEO of Atlantis Computing. “With the introduction of Atlantis ILIO FlexCloud 1.0, we are demonstrating how our technology has the flexibility to deliver similar performance, cost and scalability benefits to server virtualization and the cloud.”

Atlantis ILIO was the first storage optimization software solution delivered for VDI in 2009 and is a key enabler of the largest and most successful VDI deployments in the world including JPMorgan Chase, Colt, CBRE and Washington Trust Bank.

“When we first tried to deploy desktop virtualization, we ran into performance problems and weren’t able to scale until we deployed Atlantis ILIO software to optimize how the virtual desktops use storage,” said Chris Green, VP of IT Infrastructure at Washington Trust Bank. “Today every time we add virtualized servers, we have to purchase a lot more storage to ensure that we have enough capacity and performance available for the application. We look forward to extending our use of Atlantis ILIO technology to virtualized servers.”

Atlantis ILIO FlexCloud 1.0 is application-aware storage optimization software that complements virtualization solutions from Citrix, Microsoft and VMware. The solution intelligently processes all storage IO traffic within the hypervisor to decrease the amount of IO sent to storage and boosts application performance. As a result, storage is used more efficiently as less is needed for a given application, and more applications can be supported by the storage fabric.

Atlantis ILIO FlexCloud 1.0 can be configured to use server memory (RAM) as tiered storage enabling clustered applications that require processing massive amounts of data to operate very efficiently in scale out shared storage environments.

Atlantis ILIO FlexCloud 1.0 Features
Application Characterization – Identifies and maps storage IO traffic characteristics of application and responds intelligently based on patterns.
•    Inline IO Deduplication – Eliminates duplicate Write and Read IO traffic to reduce the amount of storage traffic.
•    IO Processing – Processes IO requests from the hypervisor so that processing occurs in memory instead of being serviced by storage resulting in improved overall performance.
Scatter/Gather Coalescing – Reverses the IO blender effect introduced with virtualization by transforming smaller randomized IO traffic into easier to consume larger sequential blocks to further boost network and storage efficiency.
•    Fast Clone – Creates new virtual machine clones on demand using Atlantis ILIO without copying data from storage or introducing performance overhead.

Availability
Atlantis ILIO FlexCloud 1.0 is in private beta and is expected to be generally available this summer.

New Capabilities Enable Enterprises and Cloud Providers to Dramatically Improve Cloud Performance Assurance by Proactively Tracking Contention Storms

Cupertino, CA – May 15, 2012 – Xangati, the recognized leader in performance management for virtualization and the cloud, today announced a powerful new release of its Xangati Management Dashboard (XMD) virtualization and cloud suite. The new release of the XMD includes capabilities that give enterprises and cloud service providers a huge advantage in performance assurance for virtualized and cloud infrastructures, delivering: a comprehensive, continuous and high-precision performance management architecture now scalable to the cloud; integrated performance and capacity management in one solution; and the ability to performance profile virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) end-user activity without agents. The new release of the XMD also allows organizations to quickly uncover cross-silo contention storms with multi-dimensional and linked alert recordings incorporated into Xangati’s flagship Performance Management Engine.

In addition, Xangati simultaneously announced that all of the new XMD functionality is immediately available at absolutely no cost through integration into its VI Dashboard and VDI Dashboard trial software and the Xangati for vSphere—Freesingle host tool. Administrators can download and use the free two-week trial within a critical cluster or Xangati’s free tool for a single vSphere host for instant insights on what contention storms are within their environment. Xangati’s software has revealed contention storms in more than 90 percent of its deployments.

“As large enterprises extend virtualization deployments and begin to rely on different cloud models, performance management solutions are falling short in their ability to manage the dynamic nature of these shared environments,” said Alan Robin, CEO of Xangati. “The management capabilities that we’re delivering today fill an immediate need to dramatically improve performance assurance for cloud environments which are plagued by chronic, intermittent contention storms.”

“Our environment is highly dynamic – with students logging in and out from all over campus – making it incredibly challenging to track end-user activity,” said Ron Lee, Senior Systems Engineer at Oral Roberts University, which is using the Xangati VDI Dashboard to support its entire student body of more than 3,200 undergraduate and graduate students. “With Xangati, we can accurately track and profile VDI end-user activity from a single console – a capability that we anticipate rolling out to our entire team to ensure and maximize performance for our students. Plus, with the XMD’s agentless model, we can effortlessly scale management as our environment grows.”

“Moving to a cloud model changes everything in terms of management,” said Todd Scalzott, Director of Information Technology at Kastle Systems, a provider of innovative security systems. “Other management solutions we looked at simply couldn’t deliver for the cloud’s dynamic and shared infrastructure. With the XMD, our team was able to jump right in and start solving problems right away. Supporting our software developers is critical to our business productivity, and the XMD gives us all the right tools so we can.”

Xangati: A Performance Guarantee for Clouds

According to the 2012 IDG Enterprise Cloud Computing Survey, 63 percent of organizations plan to increase IT budgets for cloud computing initiatives over the next 12 months. The Cloud Era is coming, yet management remains an overwhelming barrier for organizations to maximize its value. Traditional management solutions do not provide the level of precision, continuous insights or scalability needed to manage these environments, resulting in:

  • contention storms affecting system performance that cannot be captured by post-mortem database driven monitoring systems;
  • compartmentalized performance monitoring that doesn’t reveal contention points across the entire infrastructure;
  • a lack of visibility for capacity issues and planning resulting in future contention storms; and an
  • inability to guarantee the dynamic end-user experience (EUX) for VDI.

The XMD architecture was built to solve these issues with live and continuous visibility across all areas of the infrastructure and features the following new capabilities:

Cloud-Scale Performance Management Engine

An 8-fold increase in the scale of environments which Xangati’s patented in-memory performance management engine will cover – without any trade off in precision:

  • delivering second-by-second precision in data collection, collation, analysis and alerts to immediately reveal areas of contention;
  • merging of automated performance profiling techniques with best practice thresholds to uncover multi-dimensional contention storms;
  • linked alert recordings which further accelerate time to resolution; and
  • maintaining full functionality and ease-of-use of the XMD 360° navigational user interface.

Proactive Capacity Management

Integration between the XMD’s performance tracking architecture and new capacity management features, giving customers both capabilities in one solution at one price and:

  • allowing enterprises to proactively identify emerging capacity issues and avoid contention storms before they happen;
  • forewarning organizations through automated alerts when they’re about to hit capacity thresholds across multiple data centers; and
  • locating spare capacity and identifying capacity hogs to give managers the specific information they need to determine where and when they should increase capacity.

VDI End-User Based Performance Profiling for VMware and Citrix

The ability to monitor and track the end user to VM activity without guest agents:

  • giving managers an accurate way to tie user behavior to performance for the very first time;
  • delivering the only solution with both VMware and Citrix connection broker API integration (with direct interaction with ViewConnection Manager and Desktop Delivery Controller);
  • establishing user performance profiles with the highest possible precision by tracking actual activity versus assessment models;
  • alerting the service desk when ‘normal’ user activity changes; and
  • allowing frictionless scalability for future growth with an agentless model.

Additionally, new enhancements have been added to support cross-functional IT teams, with focused dashboards and automated alerts now integrated for the storage team, giving storage admins the ability to track and obtain deeper insights into datastore performance health down to the LUN level.
